🔹Filtration Principle of Filter cartridge
The primary function of a filter cartridge is to remove suspended solid particles, impurities, microorganisms, and other contaminants from liquids or gases, ensuring the cleanliness of downstream systems or products. The filtration principle can generally be categorized into two types:
→ Depth Filtration : The liquid passes through a porous structure, where impurities are captured at various depths within the fiber matrix. Melt-blown cartridges are a typical example, and are therefore commonly referred to as depth filter cartridges. However, due to the limitations of the fiber fineness of the filter media, the filtration accuracy of this type is generally in the range of 1 µm to 100 µm.
→ Surface Filtration : Particles are retained on the surface layer of the filter media, similar to the effect of a sieve. Taking pleated filter cartridges as an example, manufacturers often emphasize differences in filtration surface area. Moreover, due to variations in the membrane materials used in the primary filtration layer, these cartridges can achieve higher filtration accuracy, typically in the range of 0.02 µm to 1 µm.
🔹Properties of Filter Cartridges
1. Efficiency : Refers to the ability of the filter cartridge to remove particulate contaminants, usually expressed as a percentage (%), e.g., 90%, 99%, 99.9%. Higher efficiency indicates more impurities being retained.
2. Accuracy : Refers to the minimum particle size that the filter cartridge can intercept, typically expressed in microns (µm). The higher the accuracy, the finer the particles it can remove; however, this also requires higher flow and pressure.
3. Pressure Drop : The pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the filter cartridge, reflecting the resistance of fluid flow through it.
4. Capacity/Volume : Refers to the duration or the total volume of water/liquid that the filter cartridge can process while maintaining effective filtration. It is affected by filter material, dirt-holding capacity, and operating conditions.
